MOT test changes you need to know about
Introducing new changes
MOT tests are an annual pain in the bonnet for many of us - but it’s an essential part of keeping your vehicle safe on the roads. They are fairly straightforward to complete and last between 45 minutes to one hour. There are a number of new checks being added to the criteria from 20th May 2018. These new changes could make it harder for older vehicles to pass their test and diesel vehicles will undergo stricter testing too.
Three fault categories
The new MOT test criteria is made up of three categories which will be minor, major and dangerous faults. Minor faults mean that your vehicle will still be drivable but they will appear on your MOT certificate and on your online MOT record. A major fault will mean your vehicle cannot be driven again until it’s been repaired and retested. And a dangerous fault will result in your vehicle becoming illegal to drive on the road.
What exactly are the new checks?
So, what are the new checks that mechanics are looking out for? Read the full list below:
- Prop shafts
- Bumper security and condition
- Rear drive shafts (on all vehicles)
- Cab security
- Cab steps
- Floor condition
- Undertray security
- Noise suppression material
- Emission control equipment
- Engine malfunction indicator lamp
- Fluid leaks (posing a risk to the environment)
- Reversing lights (on vehicles used from September 2009)
- Daytime running lights (on vehicles used from March 2018)
- Front fog lights (on vehicles used from March 2018)
What about diesel vehicles? They’ll undergo much stricter testing - for example, the diesel particulate filter (DPF) will have to be checked during the MOT test. If the DPF has been moved or tampered with it will result in an automatic fail. Another change is that if smoke of any colour is seen coming from a diesel vehicle it will result in a major fault.
